Speed Drawing: Spike From "Buffy The Vampire Slayer"

This is my first one of these. Spike from the TV series "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" (played by James Marsters). I did this completely on a whim and with no preparation. That's why the camera angle is weird. ;)

I gave myself two minutes to trace the original picture from a makeshift lightbox, just enough time to get an outline and basic placement of the features. Very rough outline. Then I completed the rest of the details in the drawing freehand with the original picture up on my computer monitor to work from.

Materials: Plain white printer paper and ordinary Pentel mechanical pencil.

Total working time (two minutes for tracing included): Approximately 25 minutes.

I've mostly been away from drawing for a couple of years and this seemed like a good way to get back into it. The whole point of this exercise, for me, is to get a drawing done as quickly as possible and hopefully limber up my rusty skills in the process. I'll keep doing them as long as I think I'm getting something productive out of the practice.

Constructive criticism is welcome. Flaming makes you the kind of douchebag that YouTube is famous for. :)

Amazing drawing

I have tried drawing Spike before but you did way better.

Do you have any tips on drawing like this or are you just a natural?

Thank you! So glad you liked it! :) Even though I'm not really qualified to give advice, I know how it is when you're looking for tips. About the only things I can recommend is to get some books on figure drawing and start there, and above all: Practice, practice, practice! Draw anything and everything. You won't be any good at first (I wasn't), but keep at it and in time you'll see improvement. Don't give up. Good luck! :)

Ahh, so you've read my email and opened this up for the rating and commmenting or was youtube just acting up as it does.

I'm considering getting a pig to consume you, then having a BBQ and absorbing your power. You have some real talent there. I can barely pull off a stick figure.

Personally, I love this (and guess what your FGT entry should be for next year? This stuff, of course) and I can't say anything bad.

There may be flames for the BBQ.

Also, what beverage would you suggest?

Actually, I just read your email a few minutes ago (my rambling reply will come later), and I always had this open for comments and ratings. I guess the YouTube gremlins were about last night.

Flames are OK at a BBQ. Too bad I won't be able to enjoy it, what with getting eaten by a pig and all. I suggest strong black coffee (a reference you'll get if you ever get around to watching Twin Peaks) or Moutain Dew, but only if you drink it from the Cup Of Perpetual Torment.

It was good but the picture you were drawing him off of didn't look like him. I LOVE SPIKE! People say that they're on Team Edward or Jacob, but I always say I'm on Team Spike. I even made a shirt that says that!
