Shep is just being cruel to someone who was victimized. Cults know how to pull people in and the ones they pick are usually smart and young so they don't know a lot about the world. Saying you would have left after he declared who goes to heaven and hell is easy to say from the outside but I'm sure that the big changes didn't even start until members had committed everything to the leader and so had no place to else to go.
