Perhaps the best train ride of my life - an excursion on the old Waitara Branch in the Taranaki, New Zealand thanks to the Waitara Preservation Society for the ride- our train was being propelled by a vintage DSC locomotive

  • What year was this Steve?

    Ian M

  • @MajMitchell1l - Feb 22, 2011 actually on the Geography Group's Rusty Rails Trip

  • Great video, how much further on did the line go and have you any video of the actual train you were on, love to see it on here.

  • @madpetrolhead - The Line is about 7km, I didn't take any video of the train but I've loaded a pic of the train to my Flickr site's home page - Youtube won't let me post the URL here but I'm Wheel5800

  • Lots of points off the at the start, some leading to nowhere, must have been very busy once.

  • @muzzavideos - I think it was quite an interesting line, it used to service the freezing works on the right of the video at the start out of view, I'll post some pics to my Flickr site in due course.

Yes I'd love to have seen this branch in it's heydey and at one stage earthworks were created further on with the intention perhaps, of using this as a short way to Auckland

  • Hi there,

Thanks very much, at present we are in New Plymouth on holiday and could be going to Waitara tomorrow to see the old wrecked steam engine.

Is the excursion a regular event or was that a one off, someone said there was steam train excursion that runs in this area, do you know anything about it.

    Thanks again,

    Ken.

  • Good to see at least one car stop at all of them stop signs, good one to send to the New Plymouth police!

  • Very nice trip through a nice landscape. Thumbs up!
