Jill McColl: BSc Marine Science with Arctic Studies student at SAMS

Jill McColl is a student at the Scottish Association of Marine Science (SAMS), part of the University of the Highlands and Islands. She is studying BSc Marine Science with Arctic Studies, and in this video she describes what its like to study the course at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS), located in the Arctic!

"My name is Jill McColl and I am currently doing a BSc Marine Science at SAMS. I am 21 years old and I am in my third year of studies. As part of my degree, I was accepted to go and study in the Arctic at UNIS. UNIS is located on Svalbard in Norway and it is 78° North. The subjects I am studying are "Arctic hydrology and climate change" and "Pollution in the Arctic".

My reasons for wanting to study at UNIS was both educational and social. The educational reasons are that Arctic studies are a relatively new area of science that needs a lot of research done on it. UNIS provides unique courses that allow you to study the Arctic and this could make me stand out when applying for jobs or further study after I finish my degree. The social reasons for wanting to study at UNIS are that I wanted to experience studying in a different country with students from all over the world. I also wanted to experience something new and a bit different to usual exchange programmes!"
