"When a snake bites a Lithuanian, it is the snake that dies."
This typical Lithuanian expression illustrates the proud and determined nature of these Baltic people - a pride which allowed this small country to overturn a Communist regime and to obtain their independence.
Through the perspective of the Hill of Crosses (an ancient pagan site and a contemporary place of Catholic pilgrimage) this production "A Hill Apart" recounts the role that the Hill of Crosses played in the Baltic history culminating in Lithuania's statehood.
Thanks to unique access to Lithuanian archives, exclusive interviews with the former Lithuanian President Vytautas Landsbergis; those faithful imprisoned and tortured for their faith contrasted with the KGB agents responsible for their persecution; this program illustrates an intimate and moving away the combat between good and evil in this country called "The Land of Crosses".
The economic and political future of Lithuania rests still uncertain. Caught between the familiar and the unknown this nation having overcome the spectre of communism now must face the influences brought by the new influx of capitalism.
Šiaip dokumentinių filmų apie Lietuvą labai trūksta užsienio publikai. Ypač tūrėtų būti įdomi Lietuvos pagoniškoji istorija. O šis video kažkoks tai slegiantis...

Comrades, not friends. But it was the same word in Lithuanian. We do not have a special one. :D
