Residents in Melbourne's growing south-east will have access to improved rail services with the start of construction of a new station at Cardinia Road.

Public Transport Minister Martin Pakula was today joined by the Member for Gembrook Tammy Lobato to turn the first sod at the site of the new station which is part of a $220 million package for new stations in Melbourne's growth areas.

"The Brumby Labor Government is taking action to ensure people in Melbourne's south-east have good access to public transport services," Mr Pakula said.

"Delivering a new station at Cardinia Road is an important and practical step to serve the growing communities of Officer and Pakenham, which are set to grow by almost 40,000 people within the next 10 years."

"The station, due to open in late 2011, will serve current and future public transport needs and help people access jobs, study and entertainment."

The new train station, located between Officer and Pakenham stations on the Pakenham line, will provide convenient transport links to the local community.

Member for Gembrook Tammy Lobato said the new station would be integrated with other transport links.

"The train station will feature a new park and ride facility with approximately 450 car parking spaces, as well as easy access to bus stops and a taxi rank," Ms Lobato said.

"The station will also provide more sustainable transport options with pedestrian and bicycle access to the surrounding area, as well as a bike cage at the station.

"Access between the two platforms will be via a new pedestrian underpass, which will provide an easy link between the northern and southern sides of the rail line.

"The design for the new station will also include extensive lighting and closed circuit camera security surveillance (CCTV) at and near the station, including the car parks, bus stops and approach paths to the station."

The Department of Transport, Metro and John Holland project team will initially carry out earthworks and piling for foundations next to the rail line on Cardinia Road.

Over 200 suggestions were received following a competition to name the new station. The name of the station will be announced later this year.

New stations are also being built at Williams Landing, Caroline Springs and Lynbrook.
