check oil level, sounds like the valves if u ask me. It could also be the drive-belt or the camshaft-chain. But i realy think it's the valves.

I too have a maroon Lantra 1.6 from 1998. Best motor I ever owned but will have to lose it soon as cars are largely a waste of cash for me at the minute! It does sound as though your car is thirsty for a drop of oil, poor thing.
