This video focuses on the action-adventure genre by identifying its sub-genres, their narrative conventions and common codes. Example films are given for each sub-genre. It's intended for AQA GCSE Media Studies candidates sitting the June 2011 exam with the theme of action-adventure films. Please see our PortchesterSchool channel for more useful revision videos. Feel free to leave constructive comments too! Good luck in your exams.

  • Thank you that really helped, also as you talked about sub-genres what action and adventures have a hint of comedy.

Can you list them so I can deliberate whether to add this to the pitch i have already created to contribute to the USP

  • @moneyboyok Comedy is often a convention of many action-adventures and it can be included in any sub-genre. For example, Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean (swashbuckler) or Indiana Jones arguing with his father Henry in IJ and the Last Crusade (Quest). Often comedy comes from stereotypes as well, such as the over-the-top representation of Arabs through Omid Djalili character in The Mummy (historical). Hope this helps.

  • Thankyou so much this was really helpful. I have a question about the exam. When asked about conventions of a typical action adventure film should we generalise with examples such as elements of quest and exotic location or focus on one sub genre and work from there?

  • @TheVladamir95 The best way to look at this might be to focus on those codes and conventions which ALL action adventures share: exotic locations, protagonist, antagonist, exciting action, etc. Perhaps then you could briefly mention some sub-genres and pick out examples of conventions which make them special or unique. Where possible I would reference examples of films to back up your points.

  • Any ideas for the main focus of the media exam? family action adventure and television marketing ?

  • @moneyboyok Yes, I guess you will be asked to write your pitch out in full which should include a synopsis (summary) of the plot and how it will appeal to a global family audience. It also seems likely you will be asked to do a storyboard for a TV trailer (maybe 30 secs). Last year's exam asked for a 10-frame storyboard, so if you're asked to do this, I imagine it will be similar.
