  • Which 7 have you looked at? Please refer to Certainteed Shingle Applicators Manual Seventh Edition

  • Weathering conditions of all types impacts the strength, material integrity, and adhesion qualities. Aging, curling shingles certainly do not have good adhesion. I'm in Florida-have inspected thousands of roofs. typical light weight 3 tabs are done in 12-15 yr. the sun, wind, & thermal shock of thunderstorms shorten the economic life of roof materials. Maybe shingles fare better in moderate climates. aging, curling shingles certainly do not have good adhesion.

  • Exposure measured at 6" +/- thru out field . Typical recommended exposure should be 5". all aspects of shingle installation are important. Manufacturer's prescribed installation specifications are crucial for performance & warranties. Granule loss is a major contributor to shingle life & loss. As shingles lose granules more asphalt is exposed. UV rays deteriorate & crack the shingles, therefore the shingles become brittle-rip & tear with excessive blowoff.

  • As an additional clarification. This installation does not conform to any roof shingle manufacturer's specifications. Further accurate info can be obtained from Certainteed shingle Applicators Manual - 7th. Ed. or Roofing with Asphalt Shingles by Mike Guertin - published by Tauton's - For Pros By Pros to back up the facts. the shingle installation may not be an extreme case of overexposure, but the shingles are overexposed.

  • The homeowner is jeopardized with shingle loss and ensuing roof leaks and water intrusion into the attic and interior. Shingles will blowoff easier. As shingles age they become more brittle, with granule loss, this creates more susceptibility to wind uplift. 3 tab shingles adhesive strip at the end of overlap tends to break down, its adhesive strength lessens. when this occurs wind will create a uplift. With the keyways exposed, this provides a weak spot , allows the tab to tear & blowoff.

  • .I have been roofing for 27 years and I have seen more whites then immigrants show up high, drunk or talking on the phone. Make most of the mistakes thats why you see immigrants up there cus they at least show up on time and not intoxicated. nuff said

  • I dont know jlxoutlaw I just saw a video on here with 6 whiteboys - one rolling a joint and the other look like he was drink a beer while the other two were pretending having sex with each other that claim to be the fastest roofers on youtube that might have did this job

  • Haha oh jesus. my god! You sound like some sort of Artificial Intelligence my man! Keyword there is artificial. ;)

Your impersonal, bureaucratic way of analyzing roof shingles is disgusting.

I understand there is a 'science' to it, like all matters of life, science is completely relevant... but you're talking about the job that some/probable illegal immigrant did... What you NEED to do is say "Hey man, your shingles are going to blow off, this was not a satisfactory job here fellas!... redo!"

  • This guy is being really hard on quality, way too hard. Those shingles are just barely overexposed some of them look flush with the keyways. There was not much savings in material to install them this way. It probably didn't change the bundle count at all. The inspector had to search to find a few tabs that were high. He is just making work for himself.

  • man you have no idea what you are saying you are yust trowing words out . that roof looks prety good to me . and how much MONEY or METERIAL do you think a contractor can save ,if we need more shingles its beter for us since you are the one paying me.

  • It Appears From What We Can See The Shingles Have Been Installed According To Label Directions, And I Just Read About 7 Of Them.

  • Alan please get another job because what your saying is horse crap.Have any shingles blown off as of yet?Yes they may have set the coverage above the cutout but it looks to be only 1/8inch.This job is still OK.3-tabs only last 17-22 years anyway.I dont agree with anyone going above manufactures specs but it happens.I have been roofing for 40 years and I have seen it all.I do wish that every roofer would adhere to the rules but 80% of the guys are going to cut corners to save $20.

  • Jez guys, he's on an inspection job; it's a quick tip on spotting overexposed shingles. Obviously done on the fly and I still found it helpful. Overlap the separations to avoid leaks or early failure, a good tip.
