and as soon as mps would shift to 3rd gear it would go away

I have personal experience ( but in my experience it was honda civic si from US, guess they have pretty much the same power range)

the mps has huge torque compared to the type r, and much more power. up to a little over 60kmh it is pretty even, but then the turbo really gets working on the mazda. by 80kmh the mazda has about twice as much torque coming out of the engine and considerably more power. mazda understates their power and torque figures for the 3 mps, while the civic type r figures from honda are close to exact.
