Kangaroo mother care is skin-to-skin contact of a newborn baby on the parents' chest. It is essential for the premature baby's healthy development. It shows extracts from a longer DVD, and book, called "Hold Your Prem".
This summarises key information on skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding, essential care that only parents can provide!! It covers everything from the technology of the NICU, to supporting parents' emotional coping.

  • About the germs: not all germs are harmful, only the ones that are found in hospitals. Parents bring their "commensal" germs with them, and these are in fact protective, and much more so if mother is breastfeeding. How does one deal with this: can be tough, but EVIDENCE is good, and there is good evidence for fewer and less severe infections with skin-to-skin contact.
