On Sept. 15th the U.S. House of Representatives passed Representative Stephanie Herseth Sandlin's legislation to rename the Rapid City Federal Building and Courthouse after long-time U.S. District Judge Andrew W. Bogue. The legislation would designate the federal building and courthouse at 515 9th Street in Rapid City the "Andrew W. Bogue Federal Building and United States Courthouse."
"Judge Bogue dedicated his life to public service and to South Dakota and I can think of no better tribute to his legacy than for the Rapid City federal building and courthouse to bear his name," said Rep. Herseth Sandlin. "His life was marked by service to others and dedication to upholding the law and preserving justice."
Steve Bogue of Rapid City, son of Judge Andrew Bogue stated the following on behalf of the Bogue family, "Our family is most appreciative of the efforts of the offices of Representative Herseth Sandlin to introduce and move the bill in the House of Representatives to rename the federal building and courthouse in honor of Andrew Bogue, and the efforts of Senators Johnson and Thune to introduce an identical bill in the Senate. The renaming of the courthouse is a fitting honor and recognition of the many years of his service to the legal community in Rapid City and State of South Dakota and will keep his memory alive. Our thanks to all who have been involved."

A native of Parker, South Dakota, Bogue served his country in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II and later, in the Judge Advocate General Corps during the Korean War. Judge Bogue's legal career also included service as state's attorney for Turner County and as a judge in the Second Judiciary District Circuit Court. In 1970, he was appointed by President Nixon as a federal judge for the U.S. District Court for South Dakota. He served as chief judge for the District of South Dakota from 1980 to 1985 and as a Senior District Judge from 1985 until his passing in 2009. During his service on the U.S. District Court, Judge Bogue oversaw the construction of the federal building and courthouse that will be named after him under this legislation. Judge Bogue passed away on June 10, 2009 at the age of 90. Senator Johnson and Senator Thune have sponsored companion legislation in the Senate.
