Iranian Pomegranate Festival 2011 kicks off in Tehran

This is not a rock concert. It is a celebration for the arrival of Iran's most popular fruit.

In Iran pomegranates become a part of every joyful event as soon as they appear in fruit stores in early fall.

For five consecutive years the culture and art organization of Tehran's municipality has been launching an event dedicated to this attractive gift of nature.

The pomegranate festival is organized by Tehran's Eshraq House of Culture.
This year the event is titled "Pomegranate the Ruby from Paradise".
During the festival pomegranate producers from seventeen provinces have the chance to offer a variety of pomegranates and souvenirs related to their province.

But this is just a part of this year's program. The world's biggest pomegranate cake weighing 800 kilograms was showcased in the opening ceremony. An official pomegranate postal stamp was also unveiled.

Pomegranate was the symbol of fertility in ancient Persian culture. It is still the main base for luxury dishes in Iran. So far Iranian experts have verified hundreds of types of the fruit which are classified based on the skin color, seeds and taste. Iran is known as the largest producer of pomegranate in the world. Iranians' heavenly fruit continues to win the hearts of its lovers as the pomegranate festival attracts crowds for a period of days.
