This kit from Tamiya is perfect if you want to get a quick and nice result. I can recommend it to everyone. For about 12 € the kit is quite beneficial.

I painted the model with acrylic paints from Revell. For weathering MIG pigments were used.

I´m thinking of adding a small diorama to the model soon, i will add some figures and stowage, too.

The Volkswagen Kübelwagen (short for Kübelsitzwagen, meaning "bucket seat car") was a military vehicle designed by Ferdinand Porsche and built by Volkswagen during World War II for use by the German military (both Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS). Based heavily on the Volkswagen Beetle, it was prototyped as the Type 62, but eventually became known internally as the Type 82.

With its rolling chassis and mechanics built at Stadt des KdF-Wagens and its body built by US-owned firm Ambi Budd in Berlin, the Kübelwagen was for the Germans what the jeep was for the Allies.

When the German military took delivery of the first vehicles, they immediately put them to the test on- and off-road in snow and ice to test their capability at handling European winters; several four-wheel-drive vehicles were used as reference points. The two-wheel-drive Kübelwagen surprised even those who had been a part of its development, as it handily out-performed the other vehicles in nearly every test. Most notably — thanks to its smooth, flat underbody — the Kübel would propel itself much like a motorised sled when its wheels were sinking into sand, snow or mud, allowing it to follow tracked vehicles with remarkable tenacity.

In November 1943, the U.S. military conducted a series of tests as well on several Type 82s they had captured in North Africa; they concluded that the vehicle was simpler, easier to manufacture and maintain, faster, and more comfortable for four passengers than the U.S. Jeeps. This statement is at odds with U.S. War Department Technical Manual TM-E 30-451, Handbook on German Military Forces, dated 15 March 1945. In this manual (p. 416), it states "The Volkswagen, the German equivalent of the U.S. "Jeep", is inferior in every way except in the comfort of its seating accommodations."

  • Ah yes, the Tamiya Kubel! I remember building this... some 35 years ago!! :) :) But this kit is ageless... I think I did mine Panzer grey, but I'm not sure. Either way, yours is just simply beautiful.. :) I have an Italeri Kubel in 1/35 to do, I bought it second hand for a couple of pounds, very cheap.. But when built I'm sure it will loook fine, or at least I hope so! :)

  • @BasicModelling thanks alot rob! this kit is truely ageless and perfect in my opinion, thats maybe the reason why there is no "smart kit photo etched high value extreme professional edition high end - kit" from dragon or any other brand beside tamiya and italeri. a kübelwagen-model is always fine work in between some other projekst :)

  • @BasicModelling Basically, yes, we revert to a Neanderthal state unless governed properly! ;)

  • @888HamilkarBarkas888 Any why doesn't 'phonetically' begin with an f? ;)

  • @101stAirbornefilms i tried this technique not very long ago and was not very satisfied with the result...

  • @BasicModelling its kinda weird, but there is no umlaut in the word umlaut. language is full of mysteries :)

  • @MakingModelsAgain Oh, I do miss a good umlaut, from time to time!! Being Swedish they come natural to me, but not to my keyboard, unfortunately... Badger throwing? Shrew lobbing? What is going on? Has the YouTube modelling fraternity gone mad now I'm not here to keep things in order?? :) :)

  • @888HamilkarBarkas888 did you apply a gloss coat before putting them on? usually that helps

  • @888HamilkarBarkas888 u r still much much better than me.keep it up man!

  • Another cool model you made. I especially like the way you added the dust and mud. How did you do it? Did you use an airbrush to make that effect?
