@LordZast Indeed, and they should have kept it for latter seasons.

This was my favourite opening, thought it was a surprisingly dark one for a comedy. I still get awestruck by the size of the ship, too.

ADDENDUM:
Blame GEORGE LUCAS fort HIS re-tooling the 1st three STAR WARS films of the 70's & 80's..HAN SHOT FIRST!!!!
Thanx fer this, m8..

When I first heard the opening of the Original Signature Tune...it made me think that it was gonna be a VERY serious gig like BLAKES 7 or DOCTOR WHO...especially in juxtaposition to the tune being somehat akin to THE GODFATHER opening, IMO.
I didn't see the promos for RD 1, I just happened to tuen in, & was VERY surprised (and pleased) with what I saw..
Have been a card-carrying, flag-waving fan ever since.
Wish the Naylor HADN'T opted for the 'remastering' gig..

Best theme music ever. The early seasons of RD were quite brilliant; perfect pieces of tragicomedy. A Beckettian drama of stalemate, set against the shocking emptiness of the cosmos, with a bunch of good jokes thrown in. Then someone thought "my, this comedy science fiction show has turned out to be quite unexpectedly successful. Let's give them a proper budget," and it all went downhill from there.

So EPIC and menacing, the best opening to any TV program ever - I could be biased, I am obsessed with RD. I named my dog "Kryten" and everything.

Who else wants to garrotte the one person who dislikes this?

@PerfectH it is a physical model lol, there's another intro that's CGI though
-
@Jownak That's CGI? I always thought it was a physical model that they panned a camera around.

This opening music was epic. Ah, the vastness of space...
There's nothing out there, you know. There's nobody out there. No alien monsters, no Zargon warships, no beautiful blondes with beehive hairdos who say, 'Show me some more of this Earth thing called kissing. There's just Rimmer, Lister, the Cat, and a lot of floating smegging rocks. That's it. Finito.'"
Amazing how this model from the eighties can still completely and totally outdo the up to date computer generated version which I think looks dull and uninspired.

I love this opening. It just seems so....I dunno, sober or something. Not really what you'd expect from a comedy.
