Next time you fly to Tobago from Trinidad, sit on the right hand side of the plane. A few minutes after take off you will see the devastated Valencia Forest Reserve, which is one big strip mine. Some of the quarries you'll see are legal, some are not. In 2007 the government removed quarries of 150 acres or less as a designated activity for which, under the EMA Act, a CEC is necessary. A CEC is a Certificate of Environmental Clearance. In layman's terms, this means that quarries of less than 150 acres were deregulated. 95% of quarries in T&T are less than 150 acres in size. Despite making it an election promise, the present government has failed to reverse that decision, as per January 2012.
@AndrewGomez92 that's how corrupt and heartless we are as a people. I can see tnt getting just like haiti, a complete wasteland

@MsNicole876 Clearly petitioning the authorities is useless, as is forming a load of toothless NGO's...
Maybe its time for some militant environmentalism?

The quarrying is a nice combination of legal and illegal... Regardless of the EMA CEC it would happen.. Think about it, all those years EMA supposedly had the right to deny a CEC, did it stop these quarries from being established? Better yet, did it ever stop illegal terrorist organisations from managing multiple quarries in a country that it sought to overthrow?

I was on a plane to Grenada this past August and we flew south of this quarry and then turned left to head to Grenada. It seemed that every single person on the left side of the plane was in shock at this quarry.
