Here is the Santa Fe steam locomotive #3751 a few minutes out of Los Angeles Union Station. It is heading east in the middle of Interstate Freeway 10. My father sat in the back seat to capture some great shots of it at speed. The good stuff starts about half way through the clip - close ups of the valve gear, piston, drive wheels - and at the end the Highway Patrol who was following us - or the steam locomotive - or both (no we did not get a ticket....) as I recall checking the speedometer - it was doing about 75mph.
thanks to you dad! I wish I'd been there.. excellent.

i have faint memories of the '60's when i was a little boy and my day used to take me down to the railyard very early in the morning - around daybreak - and we'd watch the trains come in and go.
i still remember seeing some of these old black beauties. they were phasing them out in lieu of diesels. this was around '55 or '56. these are some of my earliest memories of life. i asked my dad what they were and he said...''choo-choo's''.

These is just something really awsome about steam locomotive running gear at speed.
Even more awsome when it apears to be running down a highway!
