This was originally a poem written in 1866 by George Johnson for his wife, Maggie. Maggie died a year after they were married. George wrote this poem for her imagining how their life would have been had they grown old together. An Englishman named James Butterfield read the poem, after moving to the United States, and wrote music for it. The song was first recorded in 1905 and has been recorded many times since then.
