How to set up the reference box: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZ7_8RO10Qo

PART 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCs3bMNrJVU

Here is the first of a big series on modelling a human head with 3DS Max. I used the 2011 version but the same will apply is using older OR newer versions. Also don't be put off by the number of parts to this particular tutorial as I have tried my best to explain EVERY ASPECT of modelling a head as best as I possibly can.

Also the screen capture software I was using only allowed 10 minute recordings, heh, but now I can record up to 20 minutes so that means a better flow and alot less 'PARTS' in future tutorials :D

Enjoy!!

  • is it normal that the 3d perspektive is black??

  • @EXClSlONGaming No it is not, unless you have a custom colour scheme set.

  • @savanath Hey, I already have. The video is called "how to set up a human head reference box"

  • oops, i meant to say 2011 in 2012, well it's mostly the same other than a few changes, mainly annoying ones T_T

  • @VisualDrug Hey, Yeh I haven't actually tried 3ds max 2012, but you could follow this tutorial if you had 3ds Max 2009 or even the old school versions (6 etc) as the MAIN tools like edit mesh/poly are pretty much the same :)

  • @3DstepTutorials you should give it a try, one of the major changes is the viewport settings, they added a setting to the view port for "realistic" settings, it gives it a weird texture and you're working in pretty much a rendered state, so you really catch any mistakes quickly, without having to stop and render it out. It's hard on the computer though ^^; my college gave me it (even though i had it, already ^^;;) and it's too strong for my current laptop, which is kinda old..

  • @VisualDrug Ahhh, yes I know the feature you're talking about. One of my students has it on his laptop, which is fairly powerful, and he demonstrated it to me. You get ambient occlusion in your viewport and real time lighting which is a great way to get a 'feel' of your models/scene. There is in fact a similar tool in the 2011 version but it is a little more basic so not as nice looking :\
