Sam West is simply amazing in this. Tortured, awkward and mercurial. Even his postures when walking are consistent with his mood swings.
There simply aren't enough movies like this.
I love it that I live in a world with so many fans with taste. Thanks, Isserley, for posting and everyone for commenting.

@greger1 When visiting after Mrs. Bast calls he is very charming. He grows more animated as he talks about his walk into the country. You can see both of the Schlegel sisters falling in love with him. This story has always cut deep into me. Charles Wilcox is horrible. He is such a bully and a beast. I don't think I could ever be happy in such a culture as that time. Could you?

i always loved this scene.the umbrella was a metaphor for the protection the upper and middle classes had i believe, they stole his umbrella/protection.

I adore this movie. Simply superb acting all around. Not a digitally animated figure, scenery or voices to be found.

Heehee. It's a scene from a movie called "Howard's End" starring Emma Thompson, Anthony Hopkins, Helena Bonam Carter (the transvestite apparantly :P) and Samuel West. One of my favourite films.
