Located 42 kms from Junagadh, Gujarat, the Gir Sanctuary spreads across 1412.13 sq kms. Fed by perennial and seasonal rivers and streams, the sanctuary has large water bodies like the Kamleshwar Dam that are good for crocodiles and birds. It was created to protect the last wild population of Lions outside the African regions. Since 1913, when the lion population over here fell drastically to just 20, the numbers have increased to around 300. It houses the pure Asiatic lions. According to the 2005 census, the total number of lions here was 359. The region has deciduous forest interspersed with semi-evergreen and evergreen flora, acacia, scrub jungle, grasslands and rocky hills. Gir experiences a tropical monsoon climate.
