I do not take any credit from SRL, he is one of the best, but... Duran was a champiion, Ray - challanger. Ray was RUNNING all the time. Is this the way titles should be won? He did the same to Hagler.
Ray was NOT afraid and NOT overrated. He faught a smarter fight this time. Their first bout he stood tow to tow...and lost. Second fight, he thought of a better plan. Any smart fighter would do the same. Its about defense!!!
I still can't believe there are people who think Duran was scared and that its is a legitimate reason. There is no way duran quit because of that. If anything he quit because some corrupt mob boss told him so. Leonard was never able to hurt or even stagger Duran whiule duran was able to inflict that type of damage on him.
Ray was afraid of DURAN.....period.Ray is vastly over-rated,that is a fact. the ref is there to make sure the fighters box....not run around like a little boy. Duran should have remained a lightweight...despite the lack of competition. It was heartbreaking to see him bloat up to fight natural big men...sad. I was with Duran in person for 20-22 of his bouts.I speak from experience in the ring, the corner and promoting.
Ray was not running he was fighting his style, if you remember in the first fight he fought Durans style and did not fair to well, although I thought the first fight was a draw. Duran is a great fighter and as a great fighter you have to adjust your strategy to try and counter what your opponent is going to do. He did not do that, all he had to do was cut the ring off, but he chose to follow Ray around the ring and eat jabs and straight rights, Ray was one of the best boxing/punchers ever.
