Talking about money is as much a societal taboo in Australia as it is in the U.S. I learned this from a story by Anneli Knight that ran in the Sydney Morning Herald on August 12, 2009. It quoted Patsy Rowe, author of The Little Book of Etiquette, whose financial advice included What NOT to ask someone about money.

Money--rooted in a title of the goddess Juno, a title denoting the power to buy--is taboo because 'having' it implies 'rendering it useless,' 'burying it in a field.' Also reminds me of Jesus' parable of "the talents" (the rich guy gave two guys a lot, they invested it and doubled it; he gave one guy a little, he 'saved' it and gave it back. The first two were given more power, the last was stripped of even what he had)
Smart people only use money in talking about how much stuff is worth.
