Brazilian police officers have swarmed into a town in the Amazon they say is the headquarters for illegal logging operations.

They've been targeting loggers who sell wood for construction in Brazil, and for export to the United States.

Aljazeera's Gabriel Elizondo visited the town of Tailandia deep in the heart of the Amazon rainforest.

  • Hey Gab nice job! It seems you've lost SOME weight since you came in... Someone here said it's too little, too late, but what about a global commercial blockade to wooden goods? It's always a quetion of demand.

  • Deforestation of the Amazon rainforest has been going on for many years at a catastrophic rate. Each year, loggers turn an area the size of Switzerland into desert, destroying the habitat not only of the wildlife, but also of the indigenous people who have lived in the rainforest for centuries, pushing them all on the brink of extinction. This raid by the Brazilian Police is too little, too late.
