Carl Johan Calleman was born in Stockholm, Sweden at noon on May 15, 1950, which corresponds to the 5 Jaguar day in the Sacred Calendar and is the exact midpoint of the month dedicated to the Roman goddess Maia, but it was during a trip to Mexico and Guatemala in 1979 while still a graduate student in toxicology at the University of Stockholm that Calleman fell in love with the people and found his spiritual home. A steady stream of synchronicities guided him to explore this culture more deeply and 1986 a position with the Department of Environmental Health at the University of Washington in Seattle made possible frequent visits to Mayan sites. Through an experience of the Harmonic Convergence he realized that others also believed that the Mayan calendar contained truth.

Even as his professional life as a world-renowned cancer researcher continued to develop, Calleman's interest in the Mayan calendar also grew and in 1993 he returned to Sweden to work full time on understanding the Mayan Calendar. Calleman's scientific methods did not rely on channeled information and he began to find provable events that matched the energy shifts on the calendar such as events in Swedish history that closely matched Baktun shifts. In 1994, Calleman self-published a short book in Swedish, Mayahypotesen, which discussed the importance of upcoming Venus Transits, but could not find a publisher for the manuscript that summarized all of his findings, the Theory of Everything, parts of which have provided source material for later books. Calleman's lectures and articles were limited to Nordic countries until 1998, when Hunbatz Men invited him to speak at a Mayan calendar conference in Merida, Yucatan.; There, the ceremonies and a trip into Honduras inspired him to start writing a new, more accessible book, The Mayan Calendar, published in 2001.

Calleman's interest in Eastern philosophies increased and he went to Golden City in India to see Sri Bhagavan in the year 2002. In 2004 his new book, The Mayan Calendar and the Transformation of Consciousness was published just in time for the Oneness Celebration, which brought together a global community of spiritual people seeking deeper guidance into the time ahead. Afterwards, Calleman lectured to international audiences and visited 20+ countries with his message. Recently, he filmed interviews with Don Alejandro Oxlaj, head of the council of elders of the Maya, together with a team in India that can see a wider unity and consensus coming about based on the true Mayan calendar. Calleman still resides at the edge of a wilderness in Orsa, Sweden, but never knows where he will be called next.
