pickeldreamer is correct

its probably a loose piston pin or connecting rod....timing is not the issue thats mechanical
-
Its all ways the timing set in the AMC's I had them same noise and it was the cam lobes , rocker arms and worn timing chain , so always replace those before you put that used amc in your jeep !
-
that is not a rod i do not believe to light of a tap a rod has a hard tap like i said and a squeak all the rod bearings i heard had a squeak to them and really squeak after they spin so did you find out hat it was im gonna have to say about 75 percent certasin a lifter cuz like i said my 350 is doing the same thing plus has a miss with the tapping noise a wrist pin or rod wouldnt make it miss just knock like crazy and squeak its amazing a bunch of people come on here hollering rod bearing
-
also i replaced my flexplate rthinking it was it and was not it so im eaither down to one of three things 1. collapsed lifter from the antifreeze that got in my oil when i had my heads go out which i have replaced now and the road and main bearings as well or 2 .wrist pin as stated or 3 flat camshaft and collapsed lifter i do not think that is a rod your are hearing thought a rod has a heavy rapping and a squeak sometimes plus when you gas it it would really hammer if it were a rod loud as rpms^
-
same noise my 79 350 4 bolt main is making i know for sure its not a rod because its got 75 pounds oil pressure down the road and 50 at idleso its not a rod or a main its like they said a lifter or wrist pin one im thinking lifter but it could be a wrist pin you never know

lifters are war or bent push rod
-
good idea
-
@pixeldreamer sounds like its a lifter or rocker tick like your not getting enough oil to the back of the galley or to the top end if you look up the back oiler mod its made for running if your going to run high rpm it helps oil get to the back of the galley by running a line right to the back berrings that are getting starved
-
I say its the muffler too, yes mount the coil sideways so the electricity pours out better
Whats that going on right under the choke? Looks like sparks jumping off the wire. Is #8 getting spark to the plug?

Don't be a stranger, tell us what you've found? I like some of these suggestions but I'd like to know what you've found.

I have not taken it apart yet, sitting in the garage on engine stand.

i had a amc 360 that siezed up because the oil pump went out. when you overheated it the oil pump probably got damaged because of the lost lubrication. try replacing the oil pump and put in full synthetic oil(Quakerstate). the oil pump was the reason why mine siezed up, but i got a new 360 and put it in. good luck
