This is a video of a llama currently at risk by most standards of llama care. He is exceptionally emaciated, with no muscle mass anywhere. As of this date he is under extreme supportive measures including oral probiotics, oral vitamin and mineral supplementation, and oral fluids since he is unwilling or unable to drink. He does eat on his own, but there is no evidence of cud activity, nor is he urinating with any regularity. Current prognosis for survival is marginal at best.
Update as of 12-12-2007:
He is still alive and accepting food. He has gotten onto his front feet ONCE in the past 48 hours after his hind end was lifted as shown in the original video. Blanketing is still continuing anytime temperatures drop below 40F to minimize impact of weather.
UPDATE: 12/18/2007
Despite not being able to maintain optimal body temperature, and set backs regarding his mobility, he has GAINED a whopping 5 lbs! I have worked at weighing him about the same time each day, and although that is less than a 3% gain, ANY gain at this point is a bonus. He consumes water YEA, but still requires substantial assistance standing, and is only good for about an hour on his feet, but every gain is a good gain. Prognosis still guarded.

  • I am sorry to say we lost him despite best efforts. The owner was subsequently convicted of first degree animal cruelty

  • What happened to them?

  • How is he now?

  • I am looking for a video on how to safely trim our Llama's feet...without causing any stress to him...he isn't very tame, due to abandonment by a former owner, and we don't want to give him any more reasons to make him hate or mistrust people. But he really needs his feet trimmed. I have had one person suggest hog tieing him, but I don't want to do that to him. We are making leaps with earning his trust, and don't want to wreck all that we have gained.

  • im glad he got better!!!!
