The urban youth of Buenos Aires, Argentina's capital city, suffer the consequences of a country marked by deep social inequalities as well as recent economic upheavals that have left 57,5% of the population without the necessary income to lead normal lives. 52% are under 22 years old. These young people receive poorer healthcare - as compared to the population as a whole - and no proper education. Increasing numbers are involved in juvenile crime, whilst many end up in jobs on the margins of society, washing windscreens, gathering refuse for recycling, or simply begging. In a society that worships those with material wealth, poverty drives a growing number of urban youth to despair. Yearning to escape a grim reality the young turn to drugs, alcohol, and at times even to suicide. Confronted with this new reality, the Catholic Church is trying to reach out to these young people through a variety of pastoral inner city projects.
