This is a video showing the start of my !0 gallon nano reef aquarium. I'm trying to do this as cheap as possible. So far I've spent 75 dollars on saltwater supplies. The tank was from a 10 gallon walmart starter kit I got from a friend. I upgraded the light to twenty watt fluorescent bulbs. This will be a fish only aquarium until i get better lighting. The background picture is made from 3 sheets of blue construction paper. so far I've bought:

mini hydrometer $10.00
white sand $8.00
fake reef rock $20.00
sea salt $6.00
two 20 watt fluorescent light bulbs $12.00
White spray paint $1.00

  • how well does the construction paper work

  • @allSaLTwater it works okay, but dont get it wet because then it looks like crap. i switched to a reguler background picture once i got a few bucks but if you wanna do things cheap you could use 3 pieces of blue construction paper. if you want updates on this tank then check out my other youtube account, (aquariumkeeper9). i'm uploading all aquarium videos there.

  • I was impressed by the hydrometer wow update more. I like your vid since you're just starting

  • @fliplunatic999 Thanx, Have you seen the latest update. I was going to start out with fake rock but then i decided to get some real rock instead. Right now theres both live and fake rock in the tank. I'm hoping the fake rock with get covered with coralline algae and start to look like the live rock. make sure to check out the latest update.

  • @trucklover9 Do you think that a filter for a 55 gallon used in a 10 gallon would cover the water circulation eliminating the use for water pumps? Btw you might want to check what base rock you're using. Crushed corals that were put together by cement are a good choice as non living rocks to turn into live rocks. Could you also tell me where you bought your live rocks.

  • @fliplunatic999 yeah I think that a 55 would cover it and certainly filter your water alot. Are you talking about the rock in this video or the other updates. The fake rock that is in this video I got at petco but I got most of my live rock for free from someone who traded some saltwater aquarium stuff for one of my 3 push mowers. If you like the fake rock in this video then you can get some at petco in the aquarium decoration section or you can get live rock at your local aquarium store.

  • What type of lights are thoes

  • All wrong...first u add da salt and make sure the salt lvl is between 1.020 and 1.022 then u add the live sand other wise the bacteria in the sand will all die since it needs salt water to survive 1week is way to little for a cycle. A cycle takes from 2 to 6 weeks and thats with live rock in from the start. U cant be cheap if ur gonna do salt water tanks. U need to read up alot more and take the right steps.

  • hey for your filter do you buy special cartridges for the filter? I have an old freshwater tank and filter and was wondering if i need to get different cartridges for saltwater? thanks

  • @fliplunatic999 you might want to consider sea slugs as reef cleaners. They are very interesting to watch in my opinion, a lettuce seaslug is what I have my eye on right now.
