This is a remake of my original in a better key for singing! I was inspired to do it by a teacher who suggested to make a video parody on "Heat versus Temperature" and I thought it was an excellent idea for students often confuse the two concepts. I want to again thank my science students for their ongoing encouragement and those students and teachers from all over the US and Canada who have offered responses. Temperature is not energy, but it is a measure of the kinetic energy of particles. Heat is measured in joules and may be potential or kinetic energy. If it is used as latent heat of fusion or vaporization, then it is potential. If it is used to raise temperature, then it is kinetic. Word are in DOCS section for dsecms on Teacher Tube or BELOW:
THE HEAT and TEMPERATURE SONG
(Based on the tune, "New York City Boy" sung by the Pet Shop Boys). Parody lyrics by Doug Edmonds 3/2010
REFRAIN: HEAT AND TEMPERATURE --- are related but not the same. Oohh HEAT AND TEMPERATURE --- to distinguish them is our aim !
1) Heat is the sum -- of all energy.
It's measured in joules -- and transfers from hot to cold.
The heat is kinetic -- if it is used --- to speed up the particles and raise temperature.
But when heat --- is used --- to cause a change --- in the state of matter
And not --- to increase --- temperature ---- then it's potential !
Sing REFRAIN once
2) A thermometer measures ---- temperature in degrees,
The kinetic energy -- of particles.
When particles move fast, the temperature's high.
And when they slow down, the temperature's low.
So temp-erature --- is not ---- it's not energy.
But temperature is a - measure of the kinetic energy of - the particles.
½ REFRAIN and then short instrumental. SPOKEN: HEAT AND TEMPERATURE --- are related but not the same.
HEAT AND TEMPERATURE --- to distinguish them is our aim !
Heat is the sum -- of all energy.
It's measured in joules -- and transfers from hot to cold. A thermometer measures ---- temperature in degrees, The kinetic energy -- of particles.
Short instrumental and then sung: HEAT AND TEMPERATURE --- are related but not the same.
HEAT AND TEMPERATURE --- to distinguish them is our aim !
Sing REFRAIN once
3) Heat is the sum -- of all energy.
It's measure in joules -- and transfers from hot to cold.
The heat is kinetic -- if it is used --- to speed up the particles and raise temperature.
But when heat --- is used --- to cause a change --- in the state of matter
And not --- to increase --- temperature ---- then it's potential !
Sing REFRAIN 2 times
Thanks for sharing --- I am so glad you liked the beat and maybe the song is helping you to remember things. That's great!!! Mr. E

As a chemistry instructor myself I applaud your ability to make learning basic science concepts fun. Bravo! You had me tapping my toes and admiring your voice. However, I am not so sure about saying sometimes heat is kinetic and othertimes heat is potential. Heat is the energy in a substance associated with the random thermal motions of its particles. Hence I see heat as being a form of kinetic. It can be converted to potential energy, sure, but it is not potential. What do you think?

@dkreller01 Hello - thanks for your note. I certainly understand your thinking! I did find a few references like the following about latent heat being potential energy. I had found a few other references as well..... Thanks for the comment! DE
Search this question: When a liquid freezes, does it lose kinetic or potential energy?

Lol, our Physics Teacher played this for us xD It was hilarious, and you make us get the concepts. Pretty awesome thing you did there! :D
