"Gloria in Excelsis Deo" (Latin for "Glory to God in the highest") is the hymn of Great Praise to God used in the Catholic Mass and Divine Services of the Episcopal Church and many other Christian churches. The text of the song brings to mind the words said by the angels as part of the announcement of the birth of Jesus to the shepherds in the field. Luke 2:14. • Attended my second-ever Episcopalian service today and heard this...lovely.

  • It was SO HARD to find this

  • I am the Organist and Choirmaster at my church and I play this a little faster myself and with a variation in stops. I use the solo trumpets on the introduction and play the middle section (Lord Jesus Christ, only son of the father) softer and then come in with a full grand sound on "For you alone are the holy one". Occasionally at that same section I will throw on the zimbelstern (little carousel of bells). The singing at my church is always very full during this setting more than any other!

  • This is my favorite part of Mass and the Sanctus!

  • my church plays this faster too... and it feels kind of happier!

  • When I first started playing for Episcopal masses (I began in the Roman Catholic church as organist), this was the 1st setting of the Gloria I played, for a vigil in 1982.

  • In my church the organist plays this much faster.

It's so nostalgic to see the altar in the old position. I wonder why this one was never pulled forward..... it's a tiny chancel... perhaps there just wasn't room.

  • I prefer S277. That is the version we used to use, and to change things up a bit, our priest switched to S280. 277 is nicer in my opinion.

  • I pray that when I die that I and all of heaven will stand before the throne of God and Jesus Christ seated at the right hand of the father and sing S280!

  • I know what you mean smog. We sing S-280 at my church almost every Sunday and I feel compelled to stare straight at the altar cross and sing out with all I have (of course I'm the organist and so not staring the music could be dangerous!). But still, it's quite dramatic every Sunday and especially at the Easter Vigil when the clergy, choir, and altar party turn towards the high altar to sing this magnificent setting of this beautiful text.
