Minnesota artist Michael Hoyt, visiting artist in residence at the University of Hawaii April 1 to 18 set up his Norae Shanty during First Friday in downtown Honolulu and on the UH campus as a way of "bridging communities through soulful exchange." His shanty is styled on Korean karaoke rooms. While here, all are welcome to come and sing a song, no matter how bad. The shanty is more of a comfy cocoon than a regular karaoke room, so as you can see, inhibitions disappear. Here, students sing R.E.M., or try to.
