I'm a samoan who is currently on-island and have just finished watchin ur report. I wish that ur forecast for the economic turnout for american samoa were wrong, but sad to say that it is EXACTLY as u have predicted. The inflation on EVERYTHING from food and groceries to gas and everyday products is staggering!! And the unemployment rate has shot through the roof!! Businesses are suffering and the people struggle to look for work to provide for their families!!

@tmb7324 It's alway's easy for one to blame the other..Although, Both!..Being Am.Samoa and the United States. During the good times and now. "BAD times. We all need to take a step back and see the whole picture. It's actually called,. bad choices in life. What America stands for is something that gives a person a chance to live a better life. Here it is BATISTA = FIDEL CASTRO. This is what would have happen to Cuba had Castro not step in. Yes i know the economic sanctions put the Gov' on it's back foot. It's not amazing when you look at how American Black and Hispanic are treated here in the USA. 24 thousand people live on this Island and fast food joints allover the Island. For goodness sake America had the chance to put a new meaning on the word rape. It's the same bullshit being done to many Island/country not at war with America. How sick can this be $800bl in Iraq plus billions more in Afghanistan. These people need to file compensations charges on America and companies that exploit them.

This is TRULY heartbreaking. My mother is a RN at LBJ Hospital working $5 p/hr and I ALWAYS thought this to be very cheap against minimum wage offered here in the U.S But you are correct Schiff, putting into perspective the cost of living in A.S $5 an hour is decent, almost middle class. It's been a year now and sad to say, the other building of Starkist has been emptied, with pretty much half of Samoa's citizens unemployed. Samoa fa'amalosi! Maybe we SHOULD consider becoming indepent???!!!!!
