Please excuse the awful video. No, I don't have a tripod and yes, I should get one.
This is a 45rpm of Ambrose playing what I think is the best version of Painting The Clouds. A normally stodgy and patrician Ambrose really lets loose on this recording, undoubtedly influenced by his time in the USA. Of course you have to wade through the ghastly vocals and cliched cymbal shots to get to the good parts. So ignore the bad video, look away and listen for the ripping reed treatments at the end. Forgettable vocals by Lou Aberlardo.
This 45rpm record is a DJ copy sent to the BBC in 1978 to promote the series Pennies From Heaven which starred Bob Hoskins.
The live recording: I would have recorded this directly to my computer however, I would need a 'line in' availability. I have a laptop running on Vista. During the latest 'upgrade' the twats at Microsoft have decided to remove the availability of line-in recording, hoping to stop people making copies of recorded music. So, until I find a way to get around the software, you are going to have to like it or get a Time Machine and find Ambrose himself for a better sound.
The turntable is a Pro-Ject 9.1 with a Tube Box II pre-amp.

  • Hello,

Just today I went to my local seller and ordered the Pro-Ject 1 Xpression III turntable and the Pro-Ject Tube Box II to go along with it. Should arrive within 7 days.

Just wondering mate, how do you find the Tube Box? Reviews are very favorable, but a vinyl buff's opinion would be much more comforting. Are you happy with it?

I like your vids by the way. It's always good to see great vinyl set-ups.

    Cheers.

  • @ausmariner1

Congratulations on the new set-up. You will be very happy with the Tube Box. I even use it now for my old Lenco TT and the sound is incredible. A couple of points: allow it to warm up for a couple of minutes before playing a record and don't keep it beside your turntable. The cables will be long enough to ensure a safe distance as to not cause interference. Let me know how you get on.

  • Nice table! Would like to hear this via a direct connection.

  • @sneskid

No kiddnin'. I have Vista on a laptop. The eggheads at Microsoft have decided to remove the mixer from the software, making it impossible to change the input from MIC to LINE. This is to stop people ripping vinyl. Thanks for the upgrade, guys. See You Next Tuesday.

Apparently a disc pressed in 1929 and re-released on 45rpm in the low hundreds in the late 70s is somehow robbing people of their daily bread.

  • by far the best version of this fabulous tune :-)

  • Great Ambrose tune, and your camera did a good job recording the sound , it sounds very good. That is a very unique looking turntable. Is that a tube type moving coil preamp to the right.

  • Love this, I had it years ago, nice to hear it again.

  • @laceup1967 that is just ridiculous! People are entitled to rip their own LP's! There must be some third party mixer software available such as AudioHijack Pro?

Sorry - a bit ignorant when it comes to pc's.

  • Well, im back but now I have my Pro-Ject Xpression III and tube box II all set up, and it sounds fantastic!

I only have it connected to a 2.1 system at the moment, but I will upgrade that sometime in the near future.

I simply can not believe the improvement of the mid's and bass. Very impressed!

I will record a video and upload it, but I only have shoot and point camera. I'll still do it though.

  • Brilliant !!! Thank you very much !
