I think the reason Boy Meets World was so successful is because their goal, unlike most tv shows today wasn't just to make money but to get an important message across.

if this show was made in more recent times, they'd show shawn taking drugs and drinking a lot, eric would look like a dead beat, jack would probably be a sex addict and not be concentrating on school, and topanga and cory would be expecting a baby in high school unsure if they really wanted to go to college. that is if the show wasn't a comedy show.
