"Mud volcanoes are essentially channels for releasing pressurized gas and mineral water, sometimes with traces of oil, together with associated mud from great depths (812km) and depositing them on the surface of the earth where they form mounds ranging from 5 to 500m high."

To get here by public transportation, take bus #105 towards Gobustan at the Funicular station in Baku; pass Gobustan for about 10km; get off bus (80 gepik) when you see large silver tanks on the left side of the road; walk away from road (on same side of road) towards little hill; cross railroad tracks; walk towards trail and follow trail; mud volcanoes are behind red rocks about 45 minute walk from main road.

  • i didn't try lighting it up...though I'm not sure there's enough methane to create a dramatic "fireball" effect. At Yanar Dag (in the Absheron Peninsula), the gas from the ground is continuous and keeps a fire going 24/7
