Most flame lickers or vacuum engines are external combustion just by pulling heat in the cylinder from a burning flame outside the cylinder. This engine is a little different in that it ignites the fuel in the cylinder with the valves open.

does this motor basically run on the same principles as a 2 stroke?

Hi castlemania08, it runs off an atmospheric cycle. (Hot air in the cylinder is cooled creating a vacuum in the cylinder pulling the piston forward.) Engines from the early 1800`s ran on cycles similar to this. hope this helps,
