Years after the original home of STAX Records was razed for a parking lot (!), a virtually identical building was reconstructed to house a museum to help preserve the legacy of the legendary Memphis music label. And a new STAX Music Academy was built right next door to help carry the tradition with new generations of students. Here the STAX Academy Band performed at the Levitt Shell as the opening act for a 2010 concert featuring Memphis soul music veterans Booker T. Jones (see levittshellarchive video #22) and the BoKeys (see video #9).
The historic Overton Park Shell was completely renovated in 2008 to become the Levitt Shell where music history continues to be made and honored for the benefit of Memphis music-loving audiences.
The Mortimer Levitt Foundation is devoted to preserving and developing amphitheaters nationwide with programs of performing arts to promote community.
