Promises of a young man a "Johnny come lately", if you will! He wows her, he razzles and dazzles her, with promises of things to come, beautiful things he can do for her. He promises things he knows damn well he can never do and has no damn intention of doing. Just wants to use you just like the "WORLD".A metaphor for an even older song or story, he promised him upon the rock overlooking the lights of the city "I will promise you all of this if you just bow down and worship me"! He walked away!

It's a reinterpretation. Most of those 'classics' were made in a studio, and then re-done by multiple artists. I can understand that perhaps you don't like this particular interpretation, but to say (and rather blithely) that rap does not have a place in a 'love song of this quality' is quite narrow-minded.

Many said similar statements about Elvis doing Gospel later in his life, but he added an edge to some boring songs.

Obviously, you're too young to have heard the original version....with Roberta Flack. Rap has its place; but not in a love song of this quality. Too many of todays songs are mere rip-offs of yesterdays classics.
