  • Portugal lost so much with that alliance. England took advantage of Portugal. Have you forgotten the British ultimatum over Portugal?

  • @kilkenian2 After what we did to help Portugal in 1147, 1380's, 1660's, 1762, 1808-11.

We needed something in return perhaps?

  • We Portuguese, still love the british hope this alliance never breaks :)

  • France, Britain, Spain and others had a big oversea empire. But everything has begun when the Portuguese crossed the good hope cape showing that sail to Europe to India is possible, as well in indic ocean the main muslin naval powers were wiped by Portugal, the pioneers in oversea empire and first European seen in several places in world.

  • @LordGeorgeRodney you didnt helped us at 1143!! we conquered the independence we WE WEEEEEE!!!!!

  • Not to speak of pirates funded by english to attack Portugal, and the fact that the alliance with the Portuguese people only started when English soldiers march into Castille so that the king of England could inerith the trohne of Castille? Hum?

  • @LordGeorgeRodney Seriosly? Whe only fought in the napoleonic war because of you, like the WW1, and the help in 1660 was only to exploit our wealth, treaties that where taking all our gold, ultimatus that forced us to lose colonies in africa, and wars that whe would have not fougth if whe weret your allies (in 1660 as a payment for your help whe gave most of out land in India).

  • @LordGeorgeRodney yes now is time to you pay back again...

That means what? I forgot the precise date, but AFTER the so called "liberal wars" the English, along with Spaniards, marched again into Portugal devastating her! In a period between 1840-1860, can't remember! And how Britain tried to conquer Macau? The oldest alliance in the world? What for? Britain always looked down on Portugal! "If you want to see the Portuguese defeated leave them to themselves!" is a sentence of a former English ambassador in Lisbon

  • @Rotebuehl1 Even D. Maria II was yong, as you know, was D. Pedro I (IV King of Portugal) in charge, with genneral Saldanha, Palmela, Mouzinho da Silveira, Aguiar etc. Spanish Liberal and British intervention only in the few last months of the 2 year war. Due to spanish Carlist Army (Carlos of Spain, the Royalist Spanish side also in civil war in Spain against Liberals at the same time) taking refuge with D. Miguel army in Portugal - in Santarém, Coimbra etc.in the last months of the war.

  • @Rotebuehl1 Even I understand you in many things and you are maybe one of the people, maybe the one in youtube whose comments and intelligence i like more; I dont agree with your first phrase, too radical and unjust to many people in my opinion. Both sides had corruption, abuses. Both had foreeign help (Gennerals) Austrian and French royalists in the "royalists" and traditionalists(Catholic ultramontanos) and French, British gennerals and captains on the Liberals(Constitucionalistas) side.

  • @Luso515PorTuoGraal The so called Liberals were the most abject kind of people of that time! Spanish and English forces helping Portuguese Armies? Where? When? The government of Queen Mary II, - a little girl then - was a hotbed of vice, subservient to Britain and bowing to Spain! You should know that! I'm astonished...

Still I ask if these topics make any sense today...

  • @Luso515PorTuoGraal This reply relates to what? Lost the trace...

  • @Rotebuehl1 I understand you, that part of Beresford etc..The Conveção of Sintra was unaceptable, but even so Wellingron is a hero in Portugal, and with a good reasons, quotes, acts etc.to contraparte to the first one.

Some english and spanish forces helping portuguese armies and peace terms in Civil wars: Liberals versus Royalists and late the Patuleia war, were due to the express requirement of Portuguese Forces Comando sides and Portuguese Governments, not iniciative of Britain or Spain.
