The St. George Utah Temple (formerly the St. George Temple) is the first temple completed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints after the forced exodus from Nauvoo, Illinois, within two years of the death of Joseph Smith, Jr. Located in the city of St. George, Utah, it was designed by Truman O. Angell and is more similar in its design to the Nauvoo Temple than to later LDS temples.

The St. George temple is the oldest temple still actively used by the members of the Church. The temple currently has three ordinance rooms and 18 sealing rooms, and a total floor area of 110,000 feet (34,000 m). It was originally designed with two large assembly halls like the earlier Kirtland and Nauvoo Temples. The lower Assembly Hall was partitioned with curtains to provide the ordinance rooms for the Endowment Ceremony. In 1938 the lower Assembly Hall was rebuilt with permanent walls dividing it into four ordinance rooms. The four ordinance rooms were later changed into the present three rooms, at the time the endowment ceremony was changed from a live endowment to one presented on film.

In the 1970s the temple was closed and underwent extensive remodeling. Spencer W. Kimball rededicated it in 1975.

  • Here's an idea pick a sensible religion that is not quite as obviously complete bollocks. It is so scary that so many people believe Smiths outrageous bullshit. Seriously re read Smiths story and point out to yourself how less gullible we are supposed to be than those thick hicks who believed him in the first place.

  • @GaryKColeman

to be honost I dont even remember writing that, but I still think Utah is a terrible place to live but cant exactly move with this economy (incase you were going to tell me to move after saying I dont like it here)

  • @timcrow420

And exactly which "tax dollars" are you talking about? None of your "tax dollars" were used in building any of the LDS Temples or any other LDS buildings.

  • The Temple Endowment will not allow you to become Gods as it says in D&C132:20. There is only 1 God in the universe and there will always only be 1 God. Get to know him because he is our saviour. Isaiah 43:10 and John 3:16. Joseph Smith gave the world a corrupted gospel. It is not the gospel of Jesus Christ. Jesus suffered for our sins on the cross, not in the Garden of Gethsemane as Mormons believe. Mormons are polytheistic. Just read Abraham chapters 4 and 5. It says Gods created earth.

  • stupid waste of tax dollars, we as humans used to build pyramids, great walls, panama canals, now we have temples and court houses in Southern Utah, this place is seriously SCREWED UP

  • Masonry decided that the Gospel of Jesus Christ was not enough to convince men to live well, but that another order, an institution, a social service group would help the Lord along. This is the genesis of Mormon temple work.

  • Thank you

  • Mormon or not, in high school or not, swearing sounds immature and unintelligent. When Im walking through the halls and hearing people all around swearing at their friends, at just anyone, or just joking around—like its a normal part of their vocabulary—I cant help but think that they are seeking attention in one of the most moronic ways possible.

  • I love the warm light you were able to capture and the use of Brother Wilkenson's testimony. Joseph Smith's witness that the "[constitution's] divinity is one of the firmly established tenets of our church" is a powerful truth! Our founding fathers and mothers sacrificed all they had to ensure that future generations would have freedom to believe and worship how they chose. May we be equally courageous to continue their legacy, stand for truth, and defend the right of religious freedom!
