Woody didn't write the song - the earliest known version of it was by Henry Whitter in 1924, which he actually called the "Lonesome Road Blues".

I am im awe!! I really don't think most people know that Woody wrote and perfomed this song...Thank the Grateful Dead for realizing what a talent that Woody Guthrie was!!
