Shoo Fly Pie 1 c. flour 2/3 c. brown sugar 1 Tbsp. shortening 1 tsp. baking soda 3/4 c. hot water 1 c. molasses 1 egg, beaten 1 9" unbaked pie shell Combine flour and brown sugar. Cut shortening into flour mix until crumbly. Reserve 1/2 c. crumbs. Dissolve baking soda in hot (but not boiling) water. In a small bowl, combine molasses, egg, and baking soda water and beat well. Pour into unbaked pie shell. Sprinkle with reserved crumbs. Bake at 375 degrees for 35 minutes.

The syrup you mention is called "King Syrup". it is indigenous t oLancaster county, PA. It has a picture of a lion on the tin. I grew up with this stuff, being a native of Amish country

Just web search Amish & Shoo Fly Pies. They are an Amish tradition BUT the texture is gooey, almost like a pecan pie but no pecans lol.

I used to have a legit Amish recipe that vanished (would be delighted to share-also wish I still had it lol). The major difference is that Old Order Amish don't use molasses-they use a syrup that is closest to Dark Corn Syrup. It's why the real ones I have had always had a different/better taste. Vanilla Pie is similar--you might want to look!
