The program itself doesn't open or the ppt file you are working on? If it is the program, try to reinstall the application. (NB 07 ppt files do not open in 03)

is there a way to click a hyperlink without going into slideshow mode? because i'm not able to click it.

Yes, simply right click on the hyperlink then click on: Open hyperlink.
