Leaving the end of the Haboro Line in Horonobe, Hokkaido, we head further north to Rishiri and Rebun islands--the two furthest north outlying islands in Japan.
Eventually heading back to the mainland, we visit Wakkanai Station, the northernmost train station in the country.
From there we start following the Tempoku Line, a 148.9 km line that closed down in 1989 and used to connect Japan's northernmost city of Wakkanai to the northeastern coast of Hokkaido, eventually heading inland and terminating in the villiage of Otoineppu, which at 850 people is the smallest independent administrative district in Hokkaido.
And watch out for the bugs!

Where do you find information like that the road was built over the tracks or which parts where completed when? This is a great series by the way, can't wait to see the third and fourth episode (and yes, I know the third is already up ^^)!

I did a lot of research beforehand. Also, while in Sapporo near the beginning of the trip, while perusing a bookstore I came across an excellent book entitled "鉄道廃線跡を歩く" (Walk the Remains of the Abandoned Rail). That book ended up being an amazing resource while searching out the old rail.
I also found that I could get lots of help and information from chatting up old lady farmers who were out tending their fields, as the majority of them had grown up near the train lines.
