http://www.altashcamp.tk/ The best way to pay respect to our martyrs, is to continue their struggle." -- Dr. A. R. Ghassemlou
The life of a nation, its trajectories, its achievements, and the political challenges it tries to master are echoed in its literature and in its narrations, and sometimes in the life of one of its individual members. In the case of the Kurdish nation, the largest stateless nation in the world, the life of the great leader Dr. A. R. Ghassemlou bears witness to this fact. Dr. Ghassemlou's life illustrates the role that an individual leader can play in the political life of a nation. At the same time, his life is telling of the political predicament of the Kurdish nation.
After several decades of political activity, and as the General-Secretary of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (KDPI) from 1973 onwards, Dr. Ghassemlou and the KDPI representative in Europe, Abdullah Ghaderi-Azar, were assassinated in Vienna by the agents of the Islamic Republic of Iran on July 13, 1989. The Iranian agents also killed Fadhil Rassoul, a Kurdish university lecturer in Vienna, who had acted as mediator.
Dr. Ghassemlou and his aide were in Austria to negotiate with Iranian representatives on Kurdish rights and self-government for Iranian Kurdistan.
Dr. Ghassemlou, a resolute advocate of the rights of his people and a determined leader, was also known for giving peace a chance whenever possible. He went to the negotiating table in good faith. However, by assassinating the Kurdish leader, Iran lived up to the entrenched view among the Kurdish nation that it is not trustworthy, and that assassination is part and parcel of its political mindset and practice.
Austrian police apprehended the assassins, only to be released and turned over to the Iranian embassy in Vienna. That was an unlawful act unworthy of a democratic state that claims to be committed to the rule of law. To this day, none of the perpetrators of this terrorist crime has been brought to justice, despite the fact that the Austrian polis and intelligence service have detailed knowledge about those who ordered and carried out the assassinations.
The Democratic Youth Union of Iranian Kurdistan has started a campaign in order to put pressure on the Austrian government to reopen the investigation into the assassinations of Dr. Ghassemlou, Abdullah Ghaderi-Azar, and Fadhil Rassoul.
This Website is part of a larger effort to that end.
Given the global consensus that terrorism is a great menace to democratic societies and peoples, indeed to humanity as whole, it is high time that the terrorist conduct of the Islamic Republic of Iran, inside as well as outside of the county, be condemned and punished. In addition to being the world's leading sponsor of terrorism, assassinations of Kurdish leaders and Iranian opposition activists have become an essential part of the terrorist activities of the Iranian regime.
The Austrian state should join the rest of the International Community and condemn the terrorist practice of the Islamic Republic of Iran. By reopening the investigation into the assassinations of Dr. Ghassemlou, Abdullah Ghaderi-Azar and Fadhil Rassoul, the Austrian government would not only correct a historical mistake and remedy the unlawful act when they released the assassins, but also send a clear signal to Iran that it has joined the International Community in the fight against terrorism.
