If people are laughing and you don't think it's funny, perhaps you just aren't getting the joke. Mali does a lot of critiquing fellow slam poets here, in ways that aren't obvious. The poem is hilarious to slammers who've heard people do this stuff constantly in a bajillion different forms, but maybe not funny to someone who doesn't understand the slam scene to which Mali is speaking.

I love how people are criticizing the audience for laughing. This is actually quite funny, but apparently laughter isn't an appropriate way to express yourself when someone is reading poetry.

I laughed throughout. Not to seem superior, not because I was drunk, but because I liked it. Simplicity is a wonderful thing.

What an idiotic audience...did they know they were coming to poetry?

Laugh, 2 seconds later, laugh, another drink, 2 seconds later louder laugh...

You've got to laugh.
If you don't laugh - it might look like you don't "get" something and people might think you're stupid.
:p
I kinda feel sorry for them. Such a lack of self confidence.
