Boeing 747 splits into two on take off

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- A large cargo plane crashed at the end of a runway and split in two while trying to take off Sunday at Brussels airport, authorities said.


The plane was about to depart for a scheduled flight to Bahrain when it crashed.

Four of the five crew members on board the Boeing 747 were slightly injured and were hospitalized, said Jan Van der Cruysse, spokesman at Brussels Airport.

"The plane is very seriously damaged," he said. The aircraft cracked in two after it crashed at the end of runway 220, which lies very close to a rail line and houses.

Rail services to and from the airport were suspended as a safety precaution, however the crash did not affect other flights at the airport, Van der Cruysse said.

Francis Vermeiren, mayor of the nearby town of Zaventem, said the plane did not catch on fire when it crashed after attempting to take off. Vermeiren was coordinating rescue efforts at the airport.

"The plane is not on fire but it has split into two," he told VRT radio.

Firefighters coated the wings of the plane with special fire retardant foam as a precaution because the plane was still full of jet fuel, the mayor said.

He said the plane was on a scheduled flight to Bahrain. It was not known what cargo the plane was carrying.

Vermeiren said the pilot told rescue authorities he heard a large noise while trying to take off just after midday. It was not yet clear what caused the crash.

The plane is owned by Kalitta Air, a cargo carrier based at Willow Run Airport near Ypsilanti, Michigan, and makes regular flights from Brussels, officials said. A person who answered the telephone at Kalitta Air said Sunday morning that no one was immediately available to comment.

Het vliegtuig, een Boeing 747 van de maatschappij Kalitta Air, wou na een tussenlanding weer opstijgen vanop Brussels Airport. Maar dat manoeuvre mislukte en aan het einde van de startbaan brak het toestel in tweeën.

"De piloot heeft een raar geluid gehoord en heeft het vliegtuig weer aan de grond gezet, maar is daarbij blijven steken vlak voor de spoorweg", zegt Francis Vermeiren (Open VLD), burgemeester van Zaventem. "Het treinverkeer van en naar de luchthaven is uit voorzorg stilgelegd."

De vijf bemanningsleden, allen Amerikanen, zijn ongedeerd, maar ze zijn uit voorzorg naar het ziekenhuis gebracht. Wat er precies is misgelopen en waarom het vliegtuig niet is kunnen opstijgen, is wel nog niet duidelijk.

Er was een tijdje ontploffingsgevaar door lekkende kerosine, maar dat gevaar is nu geweken. De brandweerkorpsen van Brussel, Zaventem en Vilvoorde zijn massaal aanwezig. Ook het Rode Kruis is ter plaatse. Het provinciaal rampenplan is van kracht.

Het vliegtuig wou vertrekken naar Bahrein, voor een diplomatieke vlucht. Het had 76 ton goederen aan boord, waarvan de helft post. De rest waren "diverse goederen", waaronder een auto.

Staatssecretaris voor Mobiliteit Etienne Schouppe (CD&V) zegt dat het te vroeg is om vragen te stellen bij de lengte van de startbaan waarop het ongeval gebeurde. "Het is niet de eerste keer dat Kalitta op Zaventem landt of opstijgt", aldus Schouppe. "De commandant weet zeer goed of hij de piste veilig kan gebruiken of niet. De conclusies die men ons nu wil laten trekken wat betreft de veiligheid, die zijn zeker voorbarig."

Het vliegtuig schoof van de landingsbaan en kwam tot stilstand in de buurt van enkele vliegtuigspotters.

"Ik was aan het wachten op een vliegtuig dat zou vertrekken om een foto te maken, maar dat kwam niet af. Toen hoorde ik een lichte klop", vertelt spotter Jürgen Mussche, die het ongeluk zag gebeuren.

"Het gebeurde allemaal in een fractie van een seconde. Je ziet het toestel naderen en naderen, je wil snel in je auto, maar je hebt geen tijd."

"Ik heb al veel domme dingen gezien met vliegtuigen, maar dit wil ik toch niet meer meemaken. Het had mijn laatste dag kunnen zijn."

@Fred420ist Kalitta air cargo is a us company, the tails are all very old high hour units many formerly passenger retrofitted to cargo, and Kalitta doesn't have a good maintenance program, lots of no fly hours waiting for repairs. And they reek inside.
