@Truzikez Yes, when learning any language, it's best to learn the basics of the standard formal language before "graduating" to advanced topics like slang and idiom. Use of slang really requires a mastery of the underlying language, otherwise you might sound like an idiot. Imagine meeting your new boss or future father-in-law and calling him "bro" or "dude"!

Formal Indonesian is near to malaysian. If u wanna be cool, learn Indo slang and Javanese! (most indo slangs come from the Javanese language) Indoslang is perhaps as cool as african-american slang in the U.S.

but for foreigns, should study bahasa indonesia from this formal way. then study the slang phrases that really being used for daily conversation

lol this is too formal, i'm indonesian and i never speak like this jaja..
eg: I usually say:
I don't understand - gue gak ngerti (instead of saya tidak mengerti)
Do you speak English? - bisa ngomong Inggris gak? (instead of apakah kamu bisa berbahasa Inggris?
