Rick and Ilsa: Love Is Blue...

I was spending the evening re-watching some episodes from one of my favorite movies, 'Casablanca', when suddenly an idea of a new montage came to me.

This montage is my effort to convey the feelings of Rick: his loneliness, his jealousy, his quiet desperation, his melancholy and his inability to rejoice at the life any more.

I used the artificially aged photographs of some Moroccan landscapes to emphasize Ricks feelings. The sunset on the Hassan mosque represents himself, standing lost and alone with no one beside him; the stereotyped tumbledown buildings of Kasbah, a small town near Ouarzazad, represent his surroundings which are alien and repellent to him; the sight of the Sahara desert under the withering eastern sun represents his whole life without Ilsa.

The inscription in the end is a quotation from a beautiful piece of poetry written in 1925 by Sergey Esenin, a prominent Russian poet.
